How to play a maze

A maze is a puzzle in which you look for the way from the start to the exit through corridors and dead ends. You move along open passages, never through walls, and turn back whenever a path ends. In Vellara every maze has exactly one route to the exit, so every wrong turn leads into a dead end.

The rules of a maze

  1. You are the blue dot. The red circle is the exit.
  2. Tap on the side of the dot you want to go to: left of it to go left, above it to go up, and the same for right and down.
  3. You keep walking by yourself until the next side turning, so you do not need to tap every square.
  4. Walls block the way. You can only move along open passages.
  5. A line stays behind where you have walked. If you walk back, the line disappears again.
  6. Reach the red circle and the maze is done.

There is always exactly one route to the exit, so when a passage ends in a wall, you know you have to go back.

How to solve a maze

A maze is not solved by deduction but by looking ahead and by not wasting steps. Three habits help most.

Trace the route backwards from the exit

Mazes are drawn to lure you away from the goal. Put your finger on the exit and follow the passage back towards the dot. Dead ends near the exit are easy to spot from that side, and the first few choices at the start often become obvious.

Recognise dead ends early

A corridor that ends in a wall is a dead end. So is a passage that curls into a closed pocket. Before you commit to a turning, look a few squares ahead. If you do walk into one, simply walk back: in Vellara the line you left behind disappears, so what you see is always your current route.

Keep your bearings in a big maze

In bigger mazes you no longer see everything at once. Use the zoom buttons to find the overview you are allowed, and note roughly in which direction the red circle lies. Heading that way is a good first guess, but be ready to go around when the passage turns away.

Playing Maze in Vellara

Tap next to the dot on the side you want to go to, and it walks on until the next side turning. A line shows where you have been. Maze comes in five levels, from a small maze that fits entirely on screen to a large one where you only see part at a time.

  • Five levels, from 11×11 for a gentle start up to 35×35 for experts. On the higher levels you no longer see the whole maze, and zooming far out is not allowed.
  • Above the maze: zoom out, zoom in, restart and an info button that explains the controls. A step counter and a clock sit at the top right.
  • No time pressure: a clock runs along, but you can take as long as you like.
  • Every maze has exactly one route to the exit.

Questions about mazes

Does every maze have a solution?

A proper maze does. In Vellara every maze has exactly one route to the exit, so you never have to wonder whether you are stuck for good.

What is the best way to solve a maze?

Start by looking at the whole picture. Trace from the exit back towards the start, rule out dead ends as you see them, and only then walk. On large mazes keep track of where the exit is.

What is the difference between an easy and a hard maze?

Mostly size and overview. In Vellara the easiest maze is 11×11 and fits fully on screen, while the hardest is 35×35 and shows only a third of its width at a time.

How do I move in Vellara?

Tap on the side of the blue dot you want to go to. The dot walks on by itself until the next side turning, so you do not tap every square.

Is Maze in Vellara free?

Yes. Vellara is free to download, needs no account and works offline.
