How to solve a logic puzzle
A logic grid puzzle describes a small situation, such as five people with a pet and a seat each. Clues tell you who goes with what. In a grid you mark every pair with a ✓ for a match or a ✗ for no match, until each item is paired exactly once. You never need to guess.
The rules of a logic puzzle
- Read the clues. Every category, for example names, positions and pets, has the same number of items.
- Each item belongs to exactly one item in every other category.
- Tap a square to mark a match (✓) or a no match (✗) between two items.
- In every row and every column of a block there is exactly one ✓.
- Combine the clues with what you have already marked until every item is paired.
Each puzzle has exactly one solution, so the clues always lead to the answer by logic alone.
How to solve a logic puzzle
Three habits take you a long way. Use them in turn whenever you get stuck.
Start with the clues that state a fact
A clue such as “Anna does not own the cat” gives you a ✗ straight away, and “Ben owns the parrot” gives you a ✓. Fill in everything that follows directly first. Every ✓ and ✗ you add makes the next clue easier to read.
Cross out the rest of the line
Once a row or column of a block holds a ✓, every other square in that row and column must be a ✗. If only one empty square is left in a line, the ✓ belongs there. In Vellara the app adds these grey crosses for you when you place a ✓, and you can switch that off in Settings.
Link the blocks together
If Anna goes with the cat and the cat goes with the third seat, then Anna goes with the third seat. It works the other way round too: if Anna goes with the cat and the cat is not in the third seat, Anna is not either. Each block passes information on to the others.

Tap a square to cycle between empty, ✓ and ✗. If two entries clash, both turn red. The grid is on screen 1, and the answer and the clues are on screen 2. Switch with the tabs at the top or the round button at the bottom right. Every puzzle is freshly generated and has exactly one solution.
- Vellara never changes what you fill in yourself. Only the grey crosses next to a ✓ come from the app, and you can turn them off in Settings.
- Five levels, shown as stars: from a gentle start with three categories and four people up to expert puzzles with five categories, where you have to think ahead.
- Above the grid: smaller or larger squares, fit to screen, an info button, clear, undo and a hint.
- No time pressure: a clock runs along, but you can take as long as you like.

Questions about logic puzzles
Is there only one solution to a logic puzzle?
Yes. Every logic puzzle in Vellara has exactly one solution, so you never need to guess. The clues always give a next step.
What do the ✓ and ✗ mean?
A ✓ means two items belong together and a ✗ means they do not. In each row and column of a block, exactly one square ends up with a ✓.
What does red mean in Vellara?
Entries that clash turn red. That happens when two ✓ sit in one line, or when a line has no square left for its ✓.
What is the difference between easy and hard logic puzzles?
The stars show the hardest step of reasoning you will need, and the number of categories grows along with them. Harder puzzles ask you to think several steps ahead.
Is the logic puzzle in Vellara free?
Yes. Vellara is free to download, needs no account and works offline.
